Size 36/38 (40/42, 44/46, 48/50) Instructions are given for first size. Figures in parenthesis refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.
Materials: 750 (800, 850, 900) g of Lana Grossa Alta Moda Alpaca (90% alpaca, 5% pure wool, 5% polyamide; 140 m/50 g) in Natural (col 14). Size 6 and 7 mm needles; size 6 and 7 mm circular needles, each 40 cm long.
Rib patt: K1, p1.
St st: K on RS, p on WS; k every rnd.
Slip stitch selvage: On RS row, knit first st tbl, sl last st pwise wyib. On WS row, purl first st tbl, sl last st pwise wyif.
Decorative bind-off: On RS row: * K1, k2tog tbl, sl last 2 sts back to left needle; rep from * 4 (5) more times, k1, k2tog tbl, knit to last 3 sts, * k2tog, k1, sl last 3 sts back to left needle; rep from * 4 (5) more times, k2tog, k1 – 6 (7) sts bound off at each edge.
Gauges: 15.5 sts and 22 rows = 10 x 10 cm in St st with size 7 mm needles and single strand of yarn; 17.5 sts = 10 cm in rib patt with size 6 mm needles and 2 strands of yarn held tog.
Back: With size 6 mm needles and 2 strands of yarn held tog cast on 115 (121, 127, 133) sts. Next row (WS): Slip st selvage, * p1, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, p1, slip st selvage. Maintaining slip st selvage, cont in rib patt as established until piece meas 17 cm from cast-on, ending with a WS row. Drop 2nd strand of yarn. Change to size 7 mm needles and cont with single strand of yarn as foll: Next row (RS): Maintaining slip st selvage, work in St st, decreasing 13 sts evenly across row = 102 (108, 114, 120) sts. Cont in St st and shape sides and sleeves as foll: Inc 1 st at each end of 5th row worked in St st, then every 4th row 3 times, then every alt row 24 times. Work 1 WS row. Cast on 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows, 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 194 (200, 206, 212) sts. Work even until piece meas 66 cm from caston, ending with a WS row. Next row (RS): Work in St st, inc 2 (1, 1, 1) st(s) at each end of row = 198 (202, 208, 214) sts. Work 1 WS row. Shape shoulders/overarms: Working decorative bind-off, at each end of RS rows, bind off [6 sts once, 7 sts once] 6 times, 6 sts once (7 sts 3 times, [6 sts once, 7 sts once] 5 times / 7 sts 8 times, [6 sts once, 7 sts once] 2 times, 7 sts 1 time / 7 sts 12 times, 8 sts 1 time). Work 1 WS row. Place rem 30 sts on holder.
Front: Work same as back until piece meas 11 cm from caston, ending with a WS row. Drop 2nd strand of yarn. Change to size 7 mm needles, cont with single strand of yarn and work same as back until piece meas 65 cm from cast-on, ending with a WS row. Shape neck: Next row (RS): Place center 18 sts to holder. Working each side separately, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge once, 1 st 4 times. At same time, when piece meas 66 cm from cast-on, inc 2 (1, 1, 1) st(s) at each shoulder edge on next RS row = 84 (86, 89, 92) sts rem for each side. Working decorative bind-off, bind off at each shoulder edge [6 sts once, 7 sts once] 6 times, 6 sts once (7 sts 3 times, [6 sts once, 7 sts once] 5 times / 7 sts 8 times, [6 sts once, 7 sts once] 2 times, 7 sts 1 time / 7 sts 12 times, 8 sts 1 time). No sts rem.
Finishing: Pin pieces to measurements and block. With mattress st and RS facing, sew shoulder/overarm seams, working 1 st in from each edge. Collar: With size 7 mm circular needle and single strand of yarn, pick up and k 80 sts evenly around neck edge including sts on back and front neck holder. Join for working in rnds. Work St st in rnds until collar meas 12 cm from pick-up rnd. Add 2nd strand of yarn, change to size 6 mm circular needle. Next rnd: With 2 strands of yarn held tog, work rib patt in rnds, increasing 8 sts evenly around = 88 sts. Work 2 more rnds in rib patt. Bind off all sts in rib. Sleeve cuffs: With size 6 mm needles and 2 strands of yarn held tog, pick up and k 48 sts evenly along sleeve edge. Next row (WS): Work in rib patt, decreasing 12 sts evenly across row = 36 sts. Cont in rib patt until cuff meas 16 cm from pick-up row. Bind off all sts in rib. Sew side and sleeve seams, leaving bottom rib of back and front open for vents.
